ESCALATION INCIDENTS

Roarkes Evacuation Plan

Roark’s Evacuation Plan is a 6 meter high sculpture consisting of a repurposed emergency staircase, appropriated from the city of Johanesburg. Translating the aesthetic of modernism into a botanical drama wrought on the landscape. Located on the 6th floor terrace of the W+A building the work pays ode to the pioneers who, through vision and hard-handed force, raised the landscape to a brutalist grandeur. It stands in formidable defiance to historical “progress”. A monumental matrix in the heart of the skyline darkness. A constructivist’s chimera on the tremoring vista of Johannesburg. We live as we dream.

The Escalation Incidents are Singers first breakthrough series. Created in response to the urban context of Johannesburg, the works balance chaotic movement with meticulous detail.

Thinking about the motion of bodies through the city and the implication of architecture on movement, Singer uses these universally recognizable emergency escapes to imply catastrophe and transcendence, gravity and levity.
